About this conversion

Convert JPG to PNG when you need lossless quality or transparency support. JPG is great for photos but uses lossy compression — every save loses a little detail. PNG keeps every pixel exactly as captured, which matters for screenshots, logos, diagrams, and any image you plan to edit further.

When this conversion is useful

  • Replacing a JPG logo with a transparent-background PNG for use on dark or coloured surfaces
  • Preparing screenshots or diagrams that need crisp edges for documentation
  • Saving a photo at lossless quality before further editing
  • Producing assets for print or design tools that prefer PNG

Quality and tradeoffs

PNG files are typically larger than JPGs because they're uncompressed. Expect the output to be roughly 2–6× the JPG size depending on the image. Going from JPG to PNG can't recover quality JPG already discarded — but it stops further loss from re-encoding.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No — PNG can't reconstruct detail JPG already removed. What it can do is freeze the current quality so subsequent edits and saves don't degrade it further.

Why is my PNG file so much larger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless, so every pixel is stored. JPG aggressively discards visual data the human eye barely notices. A 500 KB JPG photo can easily become a 2 MB+ PNG.

Does the converted PNG support transparency?

PNG itself supports an alpha channel, but JPGs don't carry transparency information. The output will have an opaque background matching the JPG.
